Laptop Storage Guide

Storage is where your laptop keeps your operating system, applications, documents, photos, videos, games, and other files.

When shopping for a laptop, there are two things to consider:

1. The type of storage
2. The amount of storage

For modern laptops, an SSD is strongly preferred over an HDD because SSDs provide much faster access to stored data.

SSD vs HDD

SSD

An SSD, or solid state drive, uses flash memory rather than spinning mechanical disks.

This allows an SSD to provide much faster access to data.

An SSD can result in:

  • Faster startup
  • Faster application loading
  • Faster file transfers
  • Faster game loading
  • A more responsive overall experience

Most modern laptops use SSD storage, and it should generally be the preferred choice when comparing otherwise similar laptops.

HDD

A hard disk drive, or HDD, uses spinning mechanical disks to store information.

HDDs can provide large amounts of storage at a relatively low cost, but they are significantly slower than modern SSDs.

HDDs are more commonly found in older laptops and inexpensive storage solutions.

How Much Storage Do You Need?

128 GB

128 GB is a small amount of storage.

It may be enough for basic computing, but space can disappear quickly after installing applications and saving files.

256 GB

256 GB can work for basic users who primarily use cloud storage and do not keep many large files locally.

However, it can become restrictive for gaming or large media collections.

512 GB

512 GB is a good starting point for many laptop buyers.

It provides considerably more room for applications, documents, photos, and some games without making the laptop unnecessarily expensive.

1 TB

1 TB is a good choice for users who store larger amounts of data.

Gamers, photographers, video editors, programmers, and users who keep large files locally can benefit from the additional capacity.

2 TB or More

Higher capacity storage is useful for people working with very large files.

Video editors, content creators, gamers with large game libraries, and professionals working with large datasets may benefit from 2 TB or more.

Can Laptop Storage Be Upgraded?

Storage upgradeability varies from laptop to laptop.

Many laptops use an M.2 SSD that can potentially be replaced with a larger drive. However, some thin laptops have storage that is soldered to the motherboard or otherwise difficult to replace.

Before buying, check whether the laptop has an available M.2 slot or whether the existing SSD can be replaced.

Storage Recommendation

For most laptop buyers:

256 GB: Basic use
512 GB: Good starting point
1 TB: Recommended for heavier users
2 TB+: Large games, media libraries, editing, and professional workloads

When choosing between otherwise similar laptops, an SSD should generally be preferred over an HDD because of the significant difference in responsiveness and loading performance.
